Don't Neglect Your Fire Safety Equipment: Extinguisher Inspection

There are few things more important than our personal safety. After all, "Safety first!" isn't just some silly saying. Fortunately most of the things that we have control over that will help us to remain safe from day to day are easy, common sense precautions. Still, in our busy lives, we need to be reminded of some of them and have our attention drawn to specifics.

Fire safety is something that everyone must be aware of, even though it is unlikely you will be involved in a fire. Fortunately it's not too difficult to brush up on basic fire safety and to become aware of what exactly you as an individual can do to make your home or workplace more safe in that area.

Fire extinguishers are just one of the things that people need to be aware of. Almost everyone passes numerous fire extinguishers every day while at home, work and running errands. They are part of the scenery. However, they are a part of the scenery that we really should remember to take note of, when we will be spending any length of time in a building.

Along with fire detectors, fire extinguishers are an important tool for those non-professional firefighters at the scene of a fire. The fire detector sets off an alarm, proclaiming that there is smoke in the area. Usually this happens in enough time for the people nearby to grab the nearest extinguisher and put it to good use on the fire, hopefully putting it out, or at least containing it until professionals arrive on the scene.

In order to ensure fire extinguisher safety, they must be maintained regularly by qualified professionals. A maintenance extinguisher inspection must be performed annually on all types of fire extinguishers. During the extinguisher inspection the pressure and content level are checked, as are the outer parts, to ensure that the extinguisher will function properly when needed.

Fire safety law also requires internal maintenance every one to six years, depending on the type of extinguisher. This type of extinguisher inspection and maintenance will have the contents of the extinguisher removed and replaced with fresh, as well as checking on the propellant levels.

Surely you are aware that fire extinguishers can save lives and prevent extreme property damage. Make sure that you have them in your home and place of work, that you know where they are located, and most especially that they are properly maintained!

Any safety device is only as good or as bad as the person's knowledge who will use it. A fire extinguisher can only do its job if you do yours and make sure you are aware of fire safety and what, where, when and how to properly use a fire extinguisher.
