Fire Alarm: Your Key To Safety
It's important for every building to be prepared and equipped to deal with difficult and emergency situations. The responsibility for this usually lies with the owner, and is sometimes regulated by the fire department. Commercial buildings must follow the fire code for that area and the specific type of building.
One important feature that should be found in most every non residential building is a fire alarm. All places in which people gather, either for work or for pleasure should have fire systems in place, ready to alert occupants in case a fire should break out in order to minimize any injury and hopefully avoid death altogether by allowing them to evacuate the area safely and in good time.
Fire alarm systems vary greatly in their complexity and form. However, they have a common purpose: to detect the presence of fire. This is done by keeping track of changes in the surroundings that are related to combustion and alerting occupants of the building if a fire has started.
There are two different ways a fire alarm might be activated. It may go off automatically when the presence of fire is detected, as a first signal to those within the building. On the other hand, some fire alarms can be manually activated. This allows for the possibility that the fire system may not detect the fire, or other danger, in which case a person who is aware of such danger can easily alert the occupants of the building by setting off the alarm. Many fire alarms operate both ways.
Most commonly fire alarms use sound to alert people of a fire or emergency. The alarm sound is often enough to get people to evacuate the building. Some alarms also use flashing lights. Less commonly other senses are alerted through olfactory alarms and even textual or tactile alarms can be used.
In large buildings where confusion might lead to difficulty, a more complex alarm system can be connected to powerful speakers which will activate a prerecorded or live announcement of directions on how to respond during the emergency. This can be very helpful in place where panic is likely to erupt at the sound of an emergency alarm.
These type of fire systems are absolutely key in enabling a building to be evacuated in case of a fire or other emergency. Because of the large area of many buildings having a fire alarm that covers the entire building and notifies everyone at once is crucial.
Of course whenever possible as in the case of schools and businesses it is a very good idea, and sometimes required, to teach those who spend time in the facility evacuation techniques and what is the proper course of action should an emergency arise. This can make responding to a fire alarm that much more smooth and effective.
